What is volumetric weight

What is volumetric weight

As an express courier service provider, we specialise in the rapid delivery of smaller items, as opposed to the movement of pallets and other larger freight items performed by general logistics and trucking companies.

This means that we collect freight in vans, typically by one individual, by hand without the use of equipment like forklifts and trolleys.  As such we must protect the Health and Safety of our contractors by limiting the maximum size and weight of items we will accept for delivery through our network.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is a measurement of the density of a parcel and may be different from the actual weight of your item. This measure is vital because your parcels can travel in vans, trucks and planes with space/weight restrictions.

The volumetric weight may be different from the actual weight of your item – charges are based on whichever is the greater of the two. The maximum weight per item is 25kgs. The maximum length is 1.8m.

How to calculate parcel volume

For square-edged parcels:

  1. Measure the length, height and width of the parcel and record in metres
  2. Use the following calculation A x B x C = m3

Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m)

e.g. 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.5 = 0.045m3

For rounded, triangular or odd-shaped parcels:

  1. Measure the length and height/weight of the parcel and record it in metres
  2. Use the following calculation A x A x C = m3

Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m)

e.g. 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.5 = 0.045m3
